Missional Opportunity for Churches in PA NY NJ MD DE

My Wife and I run an outreach project in Philadelphia each year. It's similar to Operation Christmas Child.

The following is the press release about it:

If you'd like to be involved please email us! Our goal is 1000 boxes this year, can you help?

Christmas Blessing Box Gift Program For Poverty Stricken Child In Philadelphia, Pa.

(Williamsport, PA) – Under His Wing Ministries, Inc. announces its annual Philly Hope Christmas Blessing project. Collection from area churches is scheduled for the week of December 11th 2005 with distribution scheduled for Saturday December 16th in West Philadelphia. Churches are encouraged to collect from November 1st to December 11th.

Philly Hope is a project of Under His Wing Ministries, Inc. in partnership with noted urban missionaries, Shawn and Teresa McKnight, to provide West Philadelphia children with Christmas gift boxes.

Under His Wing Ministries Inc along with Urban Impact Mission is sponsoring Philly Hope’s “Christmas Blessing” gift boxes. We would like to invite area churches to participate in the Christmas Blessing box program. Last year over 240 boxes were distributed to local West Philadelphia children. This year the goal is to collect and distribute at least 1000 boxes. Christmas is the prefect time to show these poverty stricken children in our own backyard, that we love and care for them. Under employment or broken families make having a joyous holiday difficult. Save your shoe boxes and refill them with items your own child would enjoy. Gloves and a winter hat in a box or tote, add a toy and a few new personal care supplies like a new comb or toothbrush and you can make another child feel as important as your own. Come along side and be a blessing to others.

The other project going on at the same time is a food collection project. The after school program serves 85 children, and will be expanding to 150 kids, runs each week day from 3 pm to 7:30pm. The children receive homework help, a Bible lesson, life skills training, recreation time and most importantly a full meal. For many this is the only complete meal they get. In 2006 the program will serve over 25,000 meals. Urban Impact receives no government assistance in this program and relies solely on the generosity of others to meet this need.

Under His Wing Ministries, Inc. has a list of the desired food stuffs and kitchen needs:

canned veggies: green beans, corn, pearl onions/ peas, etc
canned fruit: they are BIG on fruit sometimes the Only fruit they ever see
canned meat: ham, tuna, spam
dried items: noodles, rice, etc
dried fruits: apples, bananas
creamed soups: cream of mushroom, celery, etc
cheese whiz for mac and cheese

Boxes and food will be collected by participating churches through the month of November. The distribution will occur on Saturday December 16th. Call Under His Wing Ministries, Inc. at 570-419-5067 to find out how your church can participate in this show of love to those in need in our state. Participation packages including flyers and instruction envelopes are available upon request.
